Lo Ch'ing was born in 1948 in Qingdao and grew up in Taiwan. At the age of thirteen, he became the pupil of the émigré Mandchu Prince Pu Hsin-yu, who was known as the last traditional scholar-painter in China. Under Pu Hsin-yu, Lo Ch'ing studied traditional "Shan shui" style which means mountain and water, later he followed the Zen Buddhist monk Master Ju-Yu studying wet ink styles and the work of eccentric painters of the Ming and Ching dynasties. Lo Ch'ing is not only well versed in traditional painting but also a poet and an accomplished calligrapher.
Lo Ch'ing travelled in his twenties and the juxtaposition of modern symbols with traditionally executed landscapes features in most of his work.
