ZHOU Gang was born in 1958 in Shanghai. ZHOU, a painter and a calligrapher is a disciple of Fang Zengxian, one of the contemporary masters. As early as five, ZHOU trained in calligraphy and Chinese painting. ZHOU studied in China, he graduated from the Superior School of Shanghai (fine Arts section of Chinese painting) in 1982. He also studied in Japan at the Research Institute of Tokyo University (modern Art and Japanese Art section) from 1987 to 1989. Last ZHOU studied in Paris where he obtained an Advanced Diploma “ Diplôme d’Etudes approfondies” in plastic art at Paris University in 1992.
Since 1983 he has exhibited regularly in China, France and Japan. In 1993 and 1996, The Shanghai Museum and the Museum of Takaoka staged for him two important personal exhibitions. He was awarded the first prize at “the first exhibition of young artists of Shanghai” and the Golden Medal for the “premier prix international de Cannes-Azur” in France. Recently, Zhou has been invited to exhibit at the Musée des Arts Asiatiques de Toulon in spring 2009.
His works are collected by The Shanghai Museum of Art, The Cernuschi Museum in France (Paris) and Japanese institutions, and also by private collectors in Asia, Europe, and USA. Catalogues of his work have been published in France, Japan and China.
